Calculation of Margin of Error:

Results:

            More tourism: 48 votes

            No Change:     38 votes

            Less tourism:   35 votes

Comparing ‘More tourism’ vs. ‘No Change’

            More tourism: 48 votes

            No Change:     38 votes

n=86

Using the formula, Margin of Error = ±10.6%

More tourism: 48 votes±10.6%=48votes ±5.1votes= a range of 42.9 to 53.1

No Change: 38±10.6%=38votes ± 0.6votes= a range of 37.4 to 38.6

Since the ranges do not overlap, the win for ‘More tourism’ is significant at the confidence level of 95% (i.e. 19 time out of 20) when applied to the Community as a whole.

Discussion of Results:

            Overall, Eligible Female Voters were virtually tied between More Tourism and Less Tourism but very few Eligible Male Voters voted Less Tourism, pushing the net result in their favour.

            There appears to be a large age effect here. Those under 30 years of age, voted in a majority that there would be more tourism (graph 17a-C), but voters over thirty voted in a tie that there would be either less tourism or no change(graph 17a-D). The majority of females over thirty, voted that there would be less tourism but the majority of males over thirty voted that there would be no change, tying the over-thirty female vote.
